Kelli Perkins, Madeira’s Dean of Student Life and Culture, has co-authored a chapter in the book Becoming a Diversity Leader on Campus: Navigating Identity and Situational Pressures.
According to the book’s publisher, Routledge, Becoming a Diversity Leader on Campus illuminates the emerging importance of the diversity leader on college campuses and provides practical strategies and guides faculty and higher education professionals in navigating the situational, contextual, and relational constructs within the social and cultural contexts of college and university campuses.
“I became involved with the book after responding to a call for chapter proposals about navigating the tension of being a diversity leader on college campuses,” said Ms. Perkins.
My hope is that this chapter will challenge the traditional notions of what it means to be engaged in diversity work and help facilitate the understanding that diversity work actually begins with self. This is also my hope and vision for my role at Madeira.
Becoming a Diversity Leader on Campus offers a better understanding of how diversity leaders make meaning and sense of their roles, desire, and passion for promoting diversity within their institutions. Chapter authors offer narratives that represent their realities regarding the concept of diversity leadership, how they came to be in their roles, and how diversity leaders do diversity work.
You can read Ms. Perkin’s chapter, Lead Self First: Leadership and Social Justice Self-Actualization from Within the System and the entire book when it is released on November 29.
Congratulations Ms. Perkins!
