10/5 Field Hockey vs. Holton-Arms (L 5-0)  

Field Hockey lost at home on Tuesday to Holton-Arms, 5-0. The first-year trio of Maya Eisenberg, Eliana Breckinridge, and Madeleine McGuire played a hard-fought defensive game.  

10/5 Varsity Soccer vs. St. Andrew’s (L 6-2)  

Varsity Soccer lost to St. Andrews Episcopal School at home on Tuesday, 6-2. A tight match-up in the first half had the Snails trailing by one goal at the half. Lila Cahill ‘23 was able to find the back of the net with two goals and an assist from Hollis Muir ‘23 in the first half. First-year goalkeeper, Hailey Rook earned her first cap on varsity and had nine saves. 

10/5 Varsity Volleyball @ Flint Hill (L 3-0)  

Varsity Volleyball lost in three sets to top ranked Flint Hill on Tuesday. With the loss, Madeira moves to 6-2 on the season. The Snails will prepare to host Connelly School of the Holy Child in a non-divisional match up on Thursday. 

10/5 JV Volleyball @ Flint Hill (L 3-0) 

JV Volleyball lost two sets to Flint Hill on Tuesday. Although playing an experienced team, Vivian Wang ‘25 and Nia Thomas ‘25 stood out with phenomenal serving and hitting.  

10/5 Varsity Tennis vs. Oakcrest (W 6-1)  

The varsity tennis team hosted Oakcrest on October 5, winning the match 6-1. The singles lineup marked victories at one singles with Sophia Kim ‘23 winning 8-1, Suhani Malhotra ‘22 winning at three singles 8-3 and Elle Carpenter ‘25 winning 8-5. Positive signs of progress were evident as the doubles pairings swept their matches with an 8-1 victory by the number two doubles team of Mary Wu and Ellie Ernst, and were complimented by a strong showing at one doubles of Ella Bentley and Isabella Cuttica winning by score of 8-6. An exhibition match at three doubles with Ellie Strong and Cromwell Estes earned the Snails another win on the day. 

10/6 JV Soccer @ St. Andrew’s (L 7-1) 

JV Soccer played at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School on Wednesday, where they lost 7-1.  

10/6 Cross Country @ Holton-Arms 

The cross country team made their seasonal debut at Holton-Arms School on Wednesday, October 6th. The race was characterized by camaraderie and new personal records. The team was led by senior Michelle Wu, who completed the 3-mile course with a seasonal best time of 23:28. Freshman Shelby Ebert followed close behind with a time of 23:41, a new personal record. Veteran runner Kendall Deagle ‘23 and Kayla Smith ‘25 finished with seasonal best times of 25:05 and 25:16, respectively. An underclassmen pack of Sofia Larsen ‘25, Remi Klein ‘23, and veteran runner Alyssa Tave ‘24 sported respective seasonal bests of 26:33, 26:39, and 26:40. Rounding out the Top 10 were Mishka Raja ‘25 at 27:04, Shapari Ofogh ‘23 at 28:28, and Urvashi Sharma ‘23 at 30:05, all of whom dropped over 4 minutes from their previous times. Freshmen duo Marley Geist and Cindy Wu finished together with times of 30:22 and 30:23, personal bests by over two minutes. 11th grade Cross Country veteran, Zining Leslie Lan finished with a season best of 31:30, dropping over three minutes from her previous time. Olivia Zhang '25 and Kushi Nettyam '25 rounded out the team’s places with respective personal bests of 33:12 and 38:08. 

10/7 Varsity Soccer @ Oakcrest (L 1-0) 

Varsity Soccer lost to Oakcrest on Thursday, 1-0. After conceding a first half goal, Madeira battled hard to get an equalizer but came up short in a hard fought match. Molly Estes ‘22 was solid on defense all night. Lila Cahill ‘23 and Shreya Tolani ‘24 were causing the Oakcrest defense problems, but could not find the finishing touch. 

10/7 JV Soccer vs. Oakcrest (L 2-0) 

The JV Soccer squad hosted Oakcrest on Thursday, losing 2-0. Arianna Nelson ‘24 had an exceptional game in the midfield. 

10/7 Varsity Volleyball vs. Holy Child (W 3-1) 

Varsity Volleyball won Thursday’s home non-divisional match against Connelly School of the Holy Child by a score of 3-1. Madeira was able to bounce back after dropping the first set 25-21. Seniors Adrianna Anderson and Avery Lewis led the team in scoring with 9 and 8 kills, respectively. Anderson also served up 5 aces, while Avery had 15 digs on defense. The Snails move up to 7-2 on the season heading into next week’s competitive match up versus Episcopal and top-ranked Bishop Ireton. 

10/7 JV Volleyball vs. Holy Child (L 2-1) 

JV Volleyball lost to Holy Child, 2-1 on Thursday. The team won the first set 25-20, then dropped the next two sets, 25-16 and 15-13. Mallory Jirout ‘25 and Helen Bedsole ‘24 were solid on the service line. 

10/7 Varsity Tennis vs. Maret (L 6-1) 

Varsity Tennis hosted a match on Thursday, October 7, as Maret School defeated the Snails 6-1. The sole win came in at the number two doubles flight of Mary Wu and Ellie Ernst with a score of 10-4.  

10/7 JV Tennis @ Oakcrest (L 5-2) 

JV Tennis traveled to Oakcrest on Thursday, losing 5-2. Cece Travers ‘24 and Sarah King ‘23 picked up a win at number three double in a tiebreaker, 7-6. Paloma O’Leary grabbed another win for the Snails at number three singles, defeating her opponent 6-3. 

10/8 Field Hockey vs. Brookewood (W 3-1) 

The field hockey team defeated Brookewood 3-1 at home in their first victory of the season. Senior Paige Distefano scored 3 goals with assists from Alanna Korff ‘22. In addition, Caroline Kohn ‘25, Eve Hawkins ‘25, and Madeleine McGuire ‘25 all had phenomenal offensive & defensive plays. 

10/8 Cross Country @ Mercersburg Academy 

The cross country team continued their momentum this week with a race at Mercersburg Academy on Friday. The 5K course boasted grassy hills, and rolling trails for the Madeira squad. The team was led by senior Michelle Wu, as she placed 6th overall and completed the course with a time of 24:56. The Snails grabbed the last two top-10 finishes with Shelby Ebert ‘25 and Kendall Deagle ‘23 finishing in 9th and 10th with times of 26:14 and 26:30 respectively.  

10/8 Varsity Tennis @ Episcopal (L 6-1) 

Varsity Tennis finished out the week traveling to Episcopal High School, losing 6-1. Once again, the only victory was at number two doubles with Mary Wu and Ellie Ernst, winning a nail biter 10-8. Carrie Zhou ‘22 and Caroline Morehouse ‘22 won a doubles exhibition match 10-6. Ellie Strong ‘23 and Cromwell Estes ‘23 lost a heartbreaker at three doubles, 10-8.
