One of the joys of Madeira's unique Mod system is the flexibility it offers students to dive into all that captures their interests: academic niches, leadership positions, sports, and beyond. Today's interview, with the Head of Student Government Olivia Tse '25, is a prime example of how much a student can achieve when given the freedom to explore.

Please briefly introduce yourself.

My name is Olivia Tse, and I’m a 4-year senior boarder in the class of 2025. I currently serve as Head of Student Government, and have previously acted as co-class president and Head Delegate for the Model UN Team. Additionally, I have been on the varsity basketball and track and field state qualifying teams.

Why Madeira? What attracted you to attending?

Politics have always been an interest of mine, and Madeira’s prime location near Washington, D.C. made attending the school an easy choice. The Co-Curriculum program is unparalleled in its ability to foster leadership and development, and is uniquely geared towards my interests. There is no community quite like Madeira’s; You will never come across a group of young people who are equally as devoted to their success as they are to being an exceptional community member.

What has been the most impactful experience that you've had at Madeira? How did it affect you personally and in other areas of your life?

Madeira’s peer mentorship is a force to be reckoned with. There are structured elements, such as SWING sisters, Ring sisters, and student leaders. But I think what is most special is the unexpected advice and care that other Madeira students have for each other. There is a tangible sense of community, and it is clear that Madeira students cheer each other on, on campus and long after graduation.

As you look back on your time as a Snail, what would you say are your three biggest accomplishments?

Looking back, I would have to say my biggest accomplishment was developing my public speaking skills. No matter what skill you are interested in fine tuning, Madeira will provide you a platform. I would say this culminated in the Bring it To the Table ASM. I am also very proud of presenting a bill proposal to Congressman Ritchie Torres on Capitol Hill, and designing a voter registration drive for students last fall. Of course, all these things were made possible by Madeira.

Now look ahead: what are three goals you have for yourself over the next four years?

Over the next four years, I hope to broaden my perspective, and continue to meet people from all walks of life. I benefited greatly from Madeira’s diversity, and hope to continue expanding my world view at Carolina. Similarly, I will strive to take every opportunity, regardless of any personal fears. Trying new things is very important to me. Lastly, I want to get my scuba certification!

You were recently named as a Morehead-Cain Scholar. Congratulations! Could you share a bit about the program and your journey in applying? What are you most looking forward to about the program?

The Morehead-Cain scholarship is the first merit scholarship in the United States, modeled after the Rhodes Scholarship. It is given to roughly 75 students a year who exemplify the scholarship’s pillars of leadership, moral force of character, scholarship, and physical vigor. It includes covering all expenses of attending the University of North Carolina as well as fully funded summer opportunities. After being nominated by Madeira during the summer, I advanced through two selection rounds. I was then invited to the all-expenses paid Final Selection weekend, where I was interviewed and put to other tests. I am most excited to use the Morehead-Cain summer opportunities to help create change and understand our world.

What is one piece of advice that you'd give current and/or future Madeira students?

I would say try everything. The things I have enjoyed most about my Madeira experience are the ones that scared me. Take advantage of our supportive community and put yourself out there! You never know what could happen.

Anything else you'd like to share?

I would like to say thank you to The Madeira School for not only nominating me but providing me with the opportunities to develop the skills Morehead-Cain selects for.
