Madeira hosted Mercersburg Academy for the seasonal M Cup athletics competition between the schools. Match ups included field hockey, soccer, volleyball, and tennis.
Teams representing the two schools will face off over the course of 2021–2022 in 10 different sports spread over the fall, winter, and spring athletics seasons. Each win in a varsity competition earns three points, while each win in a junior varsity competition earns one point. The school with the most points at the end of the year gains bragging rights and possession of the newly created M Cup trophy.
Representatives from Under Armour, Madeira’s new apparel partner and sponsor were on-campus for the M Cup and the UA team set up an interactive product booth and recovery space for all athletes and spectators to visit on Saturday. Representatives hosted product testing for their latest running shoe, which was put to work by Madeira athletes during the 100-yard dash race during halftime of the varsity soccer game. First-year volleyball player, Nia Thomas, won the competition and was gifted a pair of shoes from Under Armour. More giveaways took place throughout the day including, blankets, water bottles, stickers, and more. An athlete recovery area featured foam rollers and a massage gun, to help students recharge after their games. Lastly, UA recognized one Madeira athlete from each team as a Women of Will MVP, selected by their coaches. Each MVP was given an Under Armour prize bag and have the recognition that the Women of Will partnership provides.
The energy from the sunny Saturday could not be beat, as Madeira and Mercersburg went head-to-head. Mercersburg was able to hold onto the Cup for another season, as they defeated the Snails in four of the seven match ups. Madeira was able to grab a pair of wins from the JV and Varsity Volleyball programs, as well as a tie from JV Soccer.
The Snails will have a chance this winter to bring the trophy back to McLean and will host M-Cup at home this spring.
