Broadway Star "Rocks" with Madeira Students

Arts Student Life

Performing arts students got a peek behind the curtain of a working actor’s life this month when they spoke with Broadway veteran Kirsten Scott. A friend of theatre teacher Ms. Tro Shaw Allen from their time at Carnegie Mellon University, Scott has appeared in numerous Broadway, touring, and regional productions, including Hairspray, Jersey Boys, An American in Paris, and more.

The biggest draw for Madeira’s students, however, is Scott’s credit playing Sherrie in the 10th anniversary production of Rock of Ages. Madeira’s theatre program opens their own production of the raucous musical on February 22.

Students who attended the session had the chance to ask Scott questions individually. Discussions included requests for advice for stage fright or auditions, inquiries about a working actor’s schedule, and reminiscing about favorite or silly moments from the anniversary production of Rock of Ages (Scott is a big fan of Waitress #1). One student even got to sing a riff from her featured moment of the show!

While it’s not every day that students get to sing in front of a Broadway star, unique learning opportunities that connect to their lived learning experiences are the norm here at Madeira. Making connections with real-world experiences is an essential part of Madeira’s mission of launching young women who change the world, one research topic, piece of legislation, or musical at a time.
