Apply

The Madeira School is looking for girls with curiosity, energy, integrity, and a commitment to academic and personal growth.

Entrance is determined by application, recommendations, interviews, and testing. Overall, we seek to admit students who can succeed academically and be contributing members of our community.  We are looking for girls who are well-suited to Madeira’s mission and challenges.

The Process

Candidates for admission need to complete their admission files and submit them with the nonrefundable application fee of $70 for domestic applicants and $120 for international applicants by January 31 to be considered for our early March notification date. Those who apply after that date are considered under a rolling admission policy. When an applicant's file is complete, it will go before the Admission Committee. A candidate for admission may apply to be either a boarding or day student. This status is expected to remain the same during her years at Madeira; changes are granted only under unusual circumstances. Candidates are encouraged to discuss these options with the Admission Office prior to completing an application.

Application Checklist

All items below are required for an application to be considered complete and ready for review by the Admission Committee:   Hide All

  • Application: Part 1  Hide

This may be done online (coming soon!) or using the paper form. (Don’t do both!) Part 1 must be submitted before your interview.

  • Application Fee  Hide

The fee ($70 for those who live in the US or $120 for those who live outside the US) is due at the time the application is submitted. If you want to use a credit card for payment, you must complete the Application Part 1 online (coming soon!).

  • Application: Part 2  Hide

    Completed by the candidate.

  • Interview  Hide

An interview is required for every applicant. We strongly recommend that every candidate for admission visit the school while classes are in session. However, an interview by telephone can be arranged for those who cannot visit the School because of distance or other factors. Interviews may be scheduled during the week between 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.; visits are not scheduled for Wednesdays because most students are off campus at their Co-Curriculum placements. Appointments should be made in advance, and visits usually last about three hours. Candidates and their parents are given a tour by a student guide and then talk with an admissions officer. Don’t forget to submit the Application Part 1 before the interview!

  • Admissions Testing  Hide

Standardized testing (SSAT, PSAT, or SAT) is required. Registration must be done in advance through the testing services. SSAT scores must be sent directly from SSAT (www.ssat.org) to The Madeira School (school code 4768). Students who do not speak English as a first language should submit TOE FL scores in addition to the required SSAT/PSAT/SAT scores.

  • Recommendations & Transcript Release  Hide

Your current math and English teachers should complete these forms after the first marking period and send it directly to Madeira. It is helpful to supply a stamped envelope addressed to The Madeira School. Be sure the Transcript Release is signed before you submit it to your school principal or counselor. S/He will attach your transcript and grades.

  • Transcripts & Current Grades Hide

Your school will send this to Madeira with the School Recommendation and Transcript Request.

The Interview

Visiting our campus and meeting with a member of the Admission staff is the best way to learn more about Madeira. The interview is a critical piece of the application process and is required of every applicant.

Most families tour the campus with a Student Admission Representative (STAR) and interview on the same day. Telephone interviews can be arranged for those who cannot visit the School due to distance or other factors.

A campus interview can be scheduled during the week between 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Visits are not scheduled for Wednesday because most of our students are off-campus at their Co-Curriculum placements.

Call 703.556.8273 to schedule your appointments in advance. Visits usually last about three hours.
